Whelp, there it is. Got tickets to go to New York City to see Kasey Chambers on March 21. Never been to New York, but we have some friends who live there, so we can crash on their couch and save a little bit of money. Should be a fun trip.

It's been a pretty busy weekend with the NCAA March Madness Music Festival. I saw Keith Urban on Friday (3/31) and Aerosmith last night (4/2)...for free! That doesn't happen too often, so I thought I'd go to two of the three nights. The Chainsmokers headlined the second night, which I passed on.

I'm not familiar with Keith's music, however, I was impressed with his proficiency on guitar, bass, and banjo. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised. I'll give it 3.5 out of five stars, mainly because I have nothing to judge it against.

Aerosmith were solid overall, however, the set list "shakeup" that Joe Perry mentioned in the Arizona Republic earlier in the week wasn't that impressive, with maybe one exception. Unfortunately, their 90s dreck is still in there. Be that as it may, here's the 15-song set list:

Nine Lives
Love In An Elevator
Crying
Young Lust  :)
Livin' On The Edge
Rag Doll
Falling In Love (Is Hard On The Knees)  :-[
Stop Messin' Around (with Perry on lead vocals)
Baby, Please Don't Go
I Don't Want To Miss A Thing  :-[
Come Together  :)
Walk This Way
Toys In The Attic  :)

Encore:

Dream On (w/ snippet of 'Home Tonight' at the beginning)
Sweet Emotion

Since I've seen Aerosmith several times beginning in 1985 I'll give this one three stars. Good, but nothing really special. Still, it was a fun weekend with many diverse artists...and fans!   8)

I've got three gigs over the next week. Should be fun:  :)

1. Testament tomorrow night (5/17), with Sepultura and Prong opening.

2. Heading to L.A. with my brother this weekend for U2, the second night (of two shows) at the Rose Bowl on Sun. 5/21.

3. Finally, back home for a solo show from Ann Wilson (of Heart) next Tues. 5/23.

Thanks 'IGDV'. Agreed, Ann is one of rock's greatest vocalists....EVER.  :)

Really quick, the main thing I can say about the triple threat of Testament, Sepultura, and Prong...DO NOT MISS! I don't say this much about veteran bands, but I think Testament is arguably at the top of their game, 30 years into their career! Frankly, there aren't many bands who can honestly say that.

They played I believe a 17 song set that combined "hits", some deeper cuts, and five songs from the new album Brotherhood Of The Snake. To their credit, I think Testament really put an honest effort into finding a happy medium (that generally pleases both band and fans) with the set list that so many other bands of their caliber fail to.

They seem to be in a really good place, onstage at least. 4.5 out of five stars! Here's the (roughly 100 minute) set list:

Brotherhood Of The Snake
Rise Up
The Pale King
Centuries Of Suffering
Electric Crown
Into The Pit
Low
Throne Of Thorns
Stronghold
Eyes Of Wrath
First Strike Is Deadly
Urotsukiduji (instrumental)
Souls Of Black
Seven Seals
The New Order

Encore:

Practice What You Preach
Over The Wall

I saw the Hall & Oates/Tears For Fears double-bill this past Monday (7/17) and must say I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. H&O in particular showed how big a part of American popular music they were and are. Four out of five stars.  :)

Tomorrow night (7/22) will be drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Billy Cobham and the Spectrum 40 Band. My first time seeing him. It should be a nice change of pace.  8)

Man, I'd love to see Tears for Fears. What a great show that'd be.

I just saw Richard Thompson over the weekend and having never even heard of him before, I was pretty impressed with his performance.

This was my favourite tune of the evening, Johnny's Far Away: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmMCdyObBHw

That guy reminds me of Warren Zevon a little bit.

Tears For Fears had a few good songs.

I have three lined up in the next few months
Two Queensryche shows and UFO/Saxon

Been debating on Styx, REO Speedwagon and Don Felder Aug 12'th in Atlantic City as well as the Deep Purple, Alice Cooper, Edgar Winter show next month in Camden, NJ and the Anderson, Rabin, Wakeman lineup of Yes in September. I'd like to hit one of those three. The Purple/Cooper/Winter show probably is the best bang for the buck considering it's a pavilion show with cheap lawn seats available.

Saw UFO and Saxon last night at the TLA in Philly, as I posted in the UFO thread.
Awesome show, both bands were exceptional. Nice crowd for a Tuesday night and most were in the venue and did not waste an opportunity to get there early, as did I, to catch all of Saxon's opening set. Biff has lost nothing of his vocal power and both he and Phil Mogg had the crowd laughing on several occasions with some funny English humor banter between songs.

Highly recommend catching this tour. Both bands had lots of energy and put on a great show last night.

Next up Queensryche next month in Atlantic City  8)

Also, they are advertising and I believe tickets are on sale for a Michael Schenker Festival at the TLA in March, 2018. Not sure who is all on the bill but I assume Michael Schenker's band at a minimum. That may be worth checking out. Also Yngwie Malmsteen is playing there in November.
