Journey
« on: July 16, 2016, 01:20:03 PM »
Journey was formed in San Francisco, CA in 1973. Born out of the ashes of the original Santana lineup that broke up after the Santana III album. Neal Schon (guitar) and Gregg Rolie (keyboards, lead vocals) fresh out of Santana joined Ross Vallory (bass), George Tickner and Prairie Prince from the Tubes (Drums). The bands first public appearance was at Winterland Ballroom, New Years Eve 1973 and Prairie Prince left shortly thereafter to rejoin The Tubes, replaced by Aynsley Dunbar (John Lennon, Frank Zappa).

Journey released their first album "Journey" in 1975. Tickner left the band prior to the release of their second album "Look Into The Future" in 1976. Following the 1977 release "Next" Columbia records persuaded Journey to change their musical style and add a front man to share lead vocal duties with Rolie. Robert Fleischman was hired as this new front man and vocalist. Journey toured with Fleischman and wrote Wheel In The Sky during this time, but he left within the year.

Steve Perry was hired as the new lead singer and front man in late 1977. Also hired was producer Roy Thomas Baker of Queen fame. Their fourth album "Infinity" 1978 was the breakthrough album containing Wheel In The Sky and going Platinum. In late 1978 Ansley Dunbar was fired and went on to work with Jefferson Starship. Steve Smith was hired as new drummer. Evolution was released in 1979 featuring "Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin" followed by 1980's Departure featuring "Any Way You Want It". The live album "Captured" was recorded on the 1980 Departure tour. Keyboardist Greg Rolie left the band after this tour and was replaced by Stevie Roseman, who recorded the one studio track for "Captured" - "The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love)" before the band changed directions and hired Jonathan Cain (The Baby's) as Rolie's replacement. "Escape" was released in 1981 and to date is certified nine times Platinum and is regarded as one of the best albums of all time and the height of Journey's success, featuring "Who's Cryin Now", "Don't Stop Believin", and "Open Arms" all three of which were top ten hits. In 1983 the band released "Frontiers", which has sold six times platinum and featured "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart), "Faithfully" and "send Her My Love". After the Frontiers massive stadium tour, the band took time off and Schon and Perry worked on solo projects, while two songs left off "Frontiers" , "Ask The Lonely" and "Only The Young" were released on movie soundtracks.

The band returned with 1986's "Raised On Radio". Having fired Ross Valory and Steve Smith over musical differences, session musicians were hired to fill their roles Randy Jackson (American Idol fame) on bass, and Larry London. This album sold two million and featured "Be Good To Yourself", "I'll Be Alright Without You", and "Girl Can't Help It". The tour for "Raised On Radio" was shortened due supposedly to Perry's unwillingness or inability to remain actively involved and Journey went on an extended hiatus in 1987.

In 1995, Journey reunited featuring Schon, Perry, Cain, Valory and Smith. They released "Trial By Fire" in 1996 which featured "When You Love A Woman". The subsequent tour was cancelled after Perry injured his hip while hiking and was unable to perform. In 1998 Schon and Cain decided to seek a replacement, at this time Steve Smith left the band and Steve Augeri joined as lead singer and Deen Castronova. This lineup released "Arrival" in 2001 and had a minor hit with "All The Way". In 2002 they released a four song EP titled "Red 13", @005 saw the 30th Anniversary tour and the release of "Generations" where each band member performed lead vocals on at least one song. In 2006 Augeri was dismissed and Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen) filled in on vocals for nearly a year before the band announced it's new singer to be Arnel Pineda. "Revelation" was released in 2008 and "After All These Years" was a minor hit, the album reached platinum status. "Eclipse" was released in 2011. The band continues to tour with steve Smith rejoining on drums in 2015 following Deen Castronova's legal issues.

This band has released some very good music over the years. I am a big fan of the era where both Rolie and Perry both contributed vocals, as well as their height of mainstream success from 1981-1983. I never got to see the band in either of those incarnations. I did however seen them on a few different occasions with both Augeri and Pineda. These shows were great none the less, but I would have loved to have seen them with Perry/Rolie.

Neil Schon is a VERY under rated guitar player in my opinion. In the grand scheme of things you rarely hear him mentioned with the greats of the time. He was over shadowed, obviously, by Carlos in Santana. but he owns some serious guitar solo's with Journey and has had some kick ass material aside from Journey as well.

I'm 98% certain we'll see a Rock Hall induction for Journey in 2017. I also think they'll close-out the night with a reunion of the classic lineup. That said, it's a shame that Dunbar will not be an inductee. Great drummer!

The 'Frontiers' tour was my second concert in July 1983. They played a three-night stand at the Coliseum in Phoenix. I went the third night. Packed to the rafters! "Journey-mania" was unstoppable that year.

This I would like to see. I know everybody has a soft spot to see Steve Perry do a tour with Journey along side Pineda, while cool for nostalgia purposes, much like the Tate situation with Queensryche in recent years, who really thinks the guy (Perry) could really do justice to those songs these days? however, Greg Rollie, as evidenced by the recent classic Santana lineup reunion still has it. I would love to see the original Journey singer who had more than a few stand out tracks himself in the early years collaborate with Schon and the boys. I think (if you read the article below) I know who was one of the someone's who did not want Rollie to jam with Journey when they played the show with the reunited Santana lineup.... Looking at you Mr. Cain.... a little too much competition there for ya bro?

New Steve Perry solo album on the way and first new song released. This isn't bad, he sounds a lot better than I expected here. He is after all almost 70 and has been away from the scene for many years. I'll be curious to hear more from this.

Neil Schon has been adding some dates for his Journey Through Time tour, joining him are former Santana/Journey bandmate Greg Rollie (organ/vocals), along with Deen Castronovo (drums/vocals), Marco Mendoza (bass), Chris Collins (guitar/keyboards) and multi instrumentalist and vocalist Marti Fredericksen.

Wish they would add some East Coast dates.

Here is a look at them. Pretty damn good Deen is a killer singer.

I saw over the weekend that apparently Greg Rollie is bailing out on the west coast dates that were added due to touring commitments with Ringo Starr's All Star Band. That takes some of the luster off of those shows for sure, but those performances were really good.

Oh that sucks. That is a major letdown on seeing that band. Rollie is the main guy I would want to see along with Neil of that lineup. If they do add east coast dates, that is a deal breaker for me wanting to see them if Rollie isn't on board.
