HEART
« on: February 01, 2016, 09:37:13 PM »
Heart was one hell of a kick ass rock band as well as very good at more melodic folky type music in the vein of some of Zeppelin's quieter moments in their break through classic lineup featuring Ann, Nancy, Howard Leese, Roger Fisher, Steve Fossen and Michael Derosier. Albums Dream Boat Annie, Little Queen, Dog & Butterfly, and to a lesser extent Bebe Le Strange showcased this version of Heart.

They made (thanks to MTV) and a move into the more glam/hair band look and feel of the early 80's a pretty major comeback starting with the Passionworks album and the hit How Can I Refuse which led up to the blockbuster Heart S/T record in 85 ,which I remember being HUGE at the time. Bad Animals followed and was just as big, Brigade was next up and still popular on the strength of a couple hit singles but they started to level off and lose their edge after that, that second wave of popularity was with pretty much an entirely different band lineup backing Ann and Nancy except for long standing member Howard Leese who was on all of both the 70's hit albums and the 80's hit records time periods, he finally left the band after the next album Desire Walks On in 1993. Various members have come and gone through this bands career. They have released three more albums since Desire Walks On but have not enjoyed any more hits beyond brigade, the new lineup is a completely different band backing Ann and Nancy none of whom were on any of the popular 70's and 80's albums. Still a great live band to catch as I have seen them a few times, they do the stuff justice and Ann can still bring it live.

Howard Leese gets major credit too for all those early biggest hits the band had. A lot of the lead guitar and synthesizer work was all him on the likes of Barracuda, Magic Man etc.

Oh absolutely. The early rhythm section was very tight also. Ann and Nancy definitely had a really good band as their vehicle for those songs for sure.

Two of Heart's early lineup members. Bassist Steve Fossen and drummer Michael DeRosier have been out touring a band they call HEART BY HEART, supplemented on lead guitar by the one and only Randy Hansen. They have two girls in the lineup, lead singer Somar Macek and Lizzy Daymont (guitar, keyboards, vocals).

Steve Fossen was an original member before the band even morphed into and took the name Heart dating back to the late 60's. DeRosier joined the band full time after drumming on two of the songs on the debut Dreamboat Annie album (four different drummers actually split duties on the sessions for that album). Both of them remained through the bands initial run of success and hits, both leaving the band after 1982's Private Audition album, which saw the bands success waning (They were replaced by Mark Andes and Denny Carmassi respectively) this new lineup released Passionworks, which was another subpar record but did yield a hit with How Can I Refuse, which led up to the 1985 self titled release and massive comeback (thanks in large part to MTV) which lasted until the Brigade album in 1990, Howard Leese's last with the band. I don't think it's much of a surprise that with Leese's departure the band never regained any of their previous glory. My opinion, but I think the facts show that to be the case. This band was a force to be reckoned with in the seventies.

This Heart By Heart lineup is doing the stuff justice. Good lead singer, tight band and Randy Hansen is a great guitarist. They are playing the Sellersville Theatre in PA August 9th.

Here's the reunion of all four of them Fossen, DeRosier, Howard Leese and Roger Fisher in 2010 with Somar Macek on vocals doing Crazy On You live. They performed three songs at a benefit concert. The first time in thirty one years the four had played together. Pretty cool.

Here are Ann and Nancy with the four of them reunited at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction 2013.

Ha Randy Hansen.  Last time I saw him was a post game show he did for the Las Vagas Wranglers hockey team.  He also played the National Anthem before the game.  Nice to see him playing something other than Handrix for a change.

Agree they do justice to the material.  With Ann and Nancy on the outs, this may be the best version of Heart out there playing shows.
