Molly Hatchet
« on: November 03, 2015, 12:57:09 PM »
Right up there with Lynyrd Skynyrd and The Allman Brothers as my favorite three of the Southern harder rock bands would be Molly Hatchet. Danny Joe Brown (who died in 1995 way too young at only 53) was always a pleasure to hear beltin it out with his distinctive gruff style, growls and whistles leading the triple guitar attack of Dave Hlubek, Duane Roland and Steve Holland in those initial years serving up Molly Hatchet and Flirtin with Disaster. Jimmy Farrar would replace Danny Joe Brown from 80-82 for Beatin the Odds and Take no Prisoners (both great albums in their own right but with a more basic rock format) before Brown's return to the fold in 1983 for No guts... No glory, followed by The Deed is Done and the EXCELLENT live album Double Trouble Live. Lightening strikes twice would be the first album with Bobby Ingram on Guitar and Danny Joe Brown's last as he was forced to exit due to ill health and would later die in 1995. Lots of personnel changes along the way but to this day Bobby Ingram continues along with a version of Molly Hatchet which features original guitarist Dave Hlubek along side him with Phil McCormack on vocals (since 96), keyboardist John Galvin (whose been a mainstay since 84 with the exception of a few year hiatus) releasing a half dozen albums since 1996 and continuing to tour.

I Highly recommend checking out the Debut album Molly Hatchet, Flirtin with Disaster, No guts...No Glory and Double Trouble Live.

Some favorites would include these:

I remember Flirtin With Disaster during my freshman year of high school 80/81.

They were like a slightly heavier, less rednecky version of Lynerd Skynerd, with a bit more biker look.

Great song. Bobby has carried the torch since 1996. Phil McCormack is on vocals here as Danny joe Brown was forced to retire due to health issues.

Sadly Danny Joe Brown, guitarist Duane Roland and drummer Bruce Crump are all deceased and no longer with us.

The current lineup is:
Dave Hlubek- (original member) guitar (71-87, 2005-present)
John Galvin- keyboards (84-90, 95-present)
Bobby Ingram- guitar (87-present)
Phil McCormack- vocals (95-present)
Tim Lindsey- bass (2003-present)

From Devil's Canyon, The final recordings of Danny Joe Brown before his sudden health issues forced him out. Brown is featured on some material on the album and Phil McCormack stepped in to complete the rest. Both vocalist can be heard on this record. Danny Joe's last album with the band.

Both guitarist Dave Hlubek and bassist Banner Thomas from the classic lineup died this year and classic lineup drummer Bruce Crump died in 2015. Danny Joe Brown passed away in 2005 and Duane Roland in 2006. The entire classic lineup is now gone. In addition Riff West bassist from 1981-90 died in 2014.

Here is Dave Hlubek, Banner Thomas and Bruce Crump reunited sitting in with the band Second Shot, which featured Dave's brother Paul Axtell on lead vocals from a few years ago at Dave Hlubek's birthday bash.
