The are two versions of this band you either like or don't...with Peter Gabriel fronting the band or Phil Collins fronting Genesis regardless there's plenty of some cool prog rock from this band and we won't go into the radio friendly love stuff they later did but here are a few things to check out from both era's of this band.

I lean on the Collins side pre-1985 (loved ABACAB), but have a deep appreciation for what they did with Gabriel in the early days.  Rutherford & Banks often get overlooked for Collins, but their contributions to Prog cannot go without their proper recognition.

I probably would say I tend to be split about 50/50 on Genesis. I think the black tour live album from 73, Foxtrot, Selling England and The Lamb Lies (if you condense the best of it down to one album) are masterpieces. Trespass and Nursery Cryme have some moments.

Likewise I think Trick of the tail, Wind and wuthering, and Abacab are masterpieces as well. And then there were three, Duke and Genesis 83 contain a few great songs also and all three of those are no slouches

I like a few songs quite a bit from Invisible Touch and We can't dance cause they are catchy tunes, but that's where they kinda lost me because while those are great radio and or mtv songs, that isn't what Genesis means to me , so I kinda view that stuff as Genesis 2.0. Got a little too cozy and mainstream and forgot where they came from.

Genesis in the beginning was an event the stage antics of Peter Gabriel along with excellent musicianship of all band members and great backup vocals by Phil made this a band you wanted to see. When Phil took over for Peter the first few albums i enjoyed when they started to make all those radio friendly pop songs although some of them are very good I was not that into it. They did do Abacab and In The Cage,
Mama, Dodo, Turn it on again and a few other really good songs that I did appreciate.
If you loved them in the beginning I suggest you go see The Musical Box a Genesis tribute band play Selling England by the Pound show it is like time traveling back to the day and the show is as good as it gets theatrics props and sound.

Love The Knife, one of my all time favorite Genesis songs, especially the live 73 versions. Great jam.

Here is Brand X, Phil Collins jazz/fusion side project he was in in the mid to late 70's. Their first album Livestock from 1977 is pretty awesome stuff.

The Knife believe it or not was a tribute to their favorite band when they started out... The Nice. There are a few organ similarities but they talked about this on an interview yrs ago.

This I'm sure wouldn't be the lineup I'd want to see reform, but I guess any is better than none.
