Iron Butterfly
« on: October 29, 2015, 02:45:08 PM »
Iron Butterfly ,like Blue Cheer I think were the two most prominent bands credited with starting Heavy Metal in the 60's. I think both these bands beat Black Sabbath to the punch, But Sabbath took it to another level, whereas IB and Cheer faded out and changed direction. Zeppelin was heavy in the beginning as well at this time. all drew from a bluesy wall of sound.

Aside from In a gadda da vida and Ball, Butterfly never enjoyed further mainstream success and various lineup changes and record label changes, or lack of record deals didn't help I suppose. But the first album heavy (with a different lineup than In a gadda da vida) was very good, In a gadda da vida was AWESOME, Ball was just as AWESOME, after that came two new guitarists to replace Eric Braun in Mike Pinera and El Rhino for the somewhat successful Metamorphesis album boasting Easy Rider and another long epic Butterfly Bleu.

After that tour they broke up and dissolved, Two albums were made in the mid seventies with partial personnel from the previous era Scorching Beauty and Sun and Steel which had some good moments on each of them, particulary the song Scorching Beauty from the Sun and Steel album, which is the better of the two albums and features Eric Braun.

Since then several different lineups have carried on through the years, sometimes including all of the In a gadda da vida lineup, which I was fortunate to see some years back a few times. Also featuring Eric Barnett (lead guitar/vocals) who is very good and presently is out touring with the band (albeit now consisting of NO original members) This is IMO a band definitely worth checking out if you (like most) aren't very familiar with them. Bassist Lee Dorman passed away in 2012, and Ron Bushy no longer tours with the band due to ill health as present. here's some good stuff of theirs to check out.

I have seen this band 10 times over the years on 8/2/1996 I saw them with NJ Firefighter at Valley Forge Music Fair. We has second row seats and saw Iron Butterfly, Black Oak Arkansas, Mountain and Foghat it was a three hour concert all the bands were great and we met from Iron Butterfly Doug Ingle, Ron Bushy and Derek Hilliard. On numerous occassions at the other Iron Butterfly concerts i have seen and met Lee Dorman, Mike Pinero, Ron Bushy, Erik Barnett,Larry Rust, Charlie Marinkovich and Martin Gershwitz.

Knew Bushy was sick and therefore not participating, but did not know what from or how severe it was, that doesn't sound good. Whether or not he is ever able to perform again best of luck to him on at least surviving it.

I have seen the current lineup that is calling itself Iron Butterfly originally before his cancer issues Ron Bushy had planned to be on this tour instead Eric Barnett after a few years away has returned and is the only member who previously played with Iron Butterfly. They play a lot more songs than usual and do a very good job on most of them unfortunately they do not play InnaGaddaDaVida very well. It's a shame Doug Ingle doesn't get back on the road and front this band. Still if you like IB they are worth seeing.

"Don't look Down on Me" was cool. what were those other couple b sides that never made it on record. The only one I have is "I Can't Help but Deceive You Little girl" from that greatest hits anthology.
