ASIA
« on: October 26, 2015, 01:27:43 PM »
The Super group originally featuring Steve Howe (YES), Carl Palmer (ELP), John Wetton (King Crimson among others) and Geoffrey Downes (YES). Their first record ASIA was an instant top selling CLASSIC.

I've tried a few times to get into Asia, but it never seems to fully work.  I really like some of their material though.

I liked the first classic lineup, but after the lineup changes started happening, I felt like they kind of lost their identity.

Totally agree here. I love the first two albums. The original Wetton/Howe/Palmer/Downes lineup was very good on Asia and Alpha. Even the second record was a step down from the first but still a very good record. Wetton was depending on what story you read and believe either forced out or quit and Greg Lake replaced him for the short term, that short term replacement produced the awesome Asia in Asia Live DVD and MTV broadcast concert.

After Howe's departure and the brief addition of Mandy Meyer (Krokus) on guitar third album Astra sold poorly and didn't fare well. I did like the minor hit song GO and I think other than the original reunion live DVD and album Phoenix when the original lineup first reunited I haven't bought another album after Astra. I never got into the John Payne/Downes era of the band after Astra.

I've seen the original lineup in recent years before Howe split again to focus on Yes, and they were good shows but very nostalgia act vibe goin on and not a lot of passion, kinda going through the motions, but with their talent level that still makes for a decent show, unlike some other bands that do it.

The 1st two records are great... it was great marriage of Wetton/Howe/Downes/Palmer and it really wasn't til they reunited a few years back you can see how they even played songs from their past bands that you truly see how good they were. After Howe left it never really was the same tbh, also Wetton is also key here, he is the real voice of Asia not Payne.

This track is a great mix of the old bands mixed into this track...

Time Again live in 1990, I'm guessing this is Mandy Meyer on guitar (Howe's first replacement in the mid eighties) before Al Pitrelli came on board

Go from Astra with Mandy Meyer

Yeah, without Wetton and Palmer I would have no time or cash to throw away on that show/lineup. I saw Asia once during the Downes/John Payne era, was kind of cool to see Chris Slade on drums, but that was a pretty sorry ass excuse for an Asia show no Wetton, no Palmer, no Howe. You can't have Asia with all three of those guys not there.
