Ross The Boss (Ross Friedman) former Manowar/Dictators
« on: October 06, 2019, 12:24:17 AM »
Ross Friedman or Ross the Boss as he is known was a founding member of the NY punk band The Dictators as well as a founding member of NY metal band Manowar. He formed the Dictators along with Andy Shernoff in 1973, prior to that he was in a local band called Total Crudd. Ross recorded three albums with the Dictators, after which he went to France and recorded an album with Fabienne Shine's band Shakin' Street, during the Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell tour where Shakin' Street was an opening act he was introduced to bassist Joey DeMaio by Ronnie James Dio, later in 1980 the two would form Manowar. Ross went on to play on the first six Manowar albums before leaving the band after the 1988 album kings of Metal.

Ross has reunited many times over the years with the Dictators both recording and performing live shows, his only reunion with Manowar came in 2005 at the Earthshaker Festival where he performed on three songs. He also was a member of fellow Dictators bandmate singer Dick Manitoba's Manitoba's Wild Kingdom, which released an album "And You?" in 1990, which received much critical acclaim and was in heavy rotation on MTV. He has also toured and released albums with his Ross The Boss Band including the new album By Blood sworn in 2018. He has also recorded with The Hellacopters, Majesty, The Brain Surgeons (with Albert Bouchard of Blue Oyster Cult fame), and death Dealer.

Ross The Boss and his band have another US tour leg beginning January 21, 2020 and wrapping up February 23, 2020. A total of 26 shows, including a return to Philadelphia at The Foundry on January 22 (second show on the tour leg). This time I will not miss the show  8)

They will be playing the Manowar -Hail To England album in it's entirety along with assorted songs from the first six Manowar albums. Tickets for the Philly show are just $20 plus service fees. That is a steal to see Ross and this band.

No, They postponed that show at like 3pm or so the day of the show without any details of why. I suspect they had issues getting back to the states from some European dates that preceded the show. The new date is scheduled for of all nights a friggin Monday night, this coming Monday night in fact. I'm still planning on going so I will give a report on it here I'm sure  8)

I dragged myself out to The Foundry last night to the rescheduled (from last month's postponed date) Ross The Boss show. They had one opening act on the bill which I only heard a few minutes of coming in, I can't remember their name. Ross's band then came on and played about an hour and a half I guess, I believe fifteen songs.

The setlist if I recall correctly was as follows.
Blood of the Kings
The Oath
Sign of the Hammer
Wheels of Fire
Violence and Bloodshed
Dark Avenger
Denied by the Cross (new song)
Glory to the Slain (new song)
Born of Fire
Blood of My Enemies
Kill with Power
Bridge of Death
Battle Hymn
Fighting the World
Hail and Kill

So all Manowar songs, plus the three new songs from the upcoming album coming out March 6, 2020, which sounds to be a pretty heavy and bad ass record. I can't wait to hear the whole thing. So they didn't quite play the whole Hail to England record, they omitted the title track, Army of the Immortals, and the guitar solo instrumental Black Arrows, but they played all the best songs from the album.

The band were loud and put on a great show. No complaints whatsoever. This singer more than adequately handled covering Eric Adams vocals and is pretty damn good. Very competent drummer and bass player and of course Ross can still jam with the best of them and is a metal legend as far as I'm concerned. I thought the Queensryche & John 5 show was criminally under attended last Wednesday night at the Keswick. Granted this was a rescheduled date that landed on a lame ass Monday night, but there were maybe a hundred fifty people at this one, if there was that many. We were a raucous and rowdy hundred and fifty though singing along to the Manowar songs and giving the band plenty of deserved loud applause. Great show overall.

Ross hung out after the show talking to fans, taking pictures, signing items and hanging at the merch table. I was able to meet him, get a few photo's with him, get my ticket stub signed and talk with him for a few minutes, very cool down to earth dude.

Here are a few videos of the show that have been posted up.
