Angra

Sad circumstances to start this one  :( .  Original lead singer and songwriter Andre Matos passed away this weekend due to a heart attack.  These gentlemen, particularly the original band with Mr. Matos, are the pinnacle of Brazilian power metal.  Think of the exuberant and speedy styles of Kiske-era Helloween with a Brazilian background and you get a sense of the style at the beginning.  As the band progressed on, the power metal took a backseat to a prog/power style while deepening the Brazilian influences, making for a truly outstanding melting pot even as Mr. Matos left to make way to the talented-in-a-different-way Edu Falaschi before he left to make way for journeyman maestro - and non-Brazilian - Fabio Lione.  Rest in Peace, Mr. Matos.

Angel's Cry Album.  Brazilian Helloween with an outstanding Wuthering Heights cover.  Mr. Matos' magnum opus IMO.

Paradise from the Fireworks album.  Mr. Matos's final work with Angra.  Sadly he had not fully patched things up with this truly special lineup before his death although Kiko Loureiro's tribute video implied that the process to doing so was beginning not long before Mr. Matos' death.

Temple of Shadows album.  Edu Falaschi's magnum opus.  One of the premier power/prog concept albums of all time (standing right next to Operation Mindcrime for me).

The Rage of the Waters from the Aqua album.  Mr. Falaschi's final album with Angra so far.  Outstanding bass solo by maestro Felipe Andreoli here.

War Horns from the Omni album released last year.  Mr. Fabio Lione really makes his mark here, and as good as he sounds with Rhapsody of Fire, I honestly prefer his work with Angra like this song.  Hopefully he decides to make this his primary musical home now.

Saw this posted last night on a few sites, vaguely familiar with the band (only heard a few songs and not sure with which vocalist) but I know Andre Matos was highly respected and I think he did some stuff with Avantasia also. In fact an article I read said he did a guest appearance with them a week before he died. I'll see if I can find that video. Will definitely give a listen to your linked recommended favorites  8)

Solid band and he was a pretty damn good vocalist, only forty seven years old that sucks, and yes he did some guest spots with avantasia dating all the way back to 2001 and was on their first world tour in 2008 and performed with them a few times since.
