Michael Schenker Group (MSG)
« on: September 13, 2017, 02:19:21 PM »
The blonde bomber Michael Schenker is a German guitarist best known for his tenure in UFO, performing on many of their classic albums. He made his debut with the Scorpions with brother Rudolf on their debut album Lonesome Crow (1972) at age 17 after which he joined UFO the following year, where he stayed until quitting in 1978. He briefly then rejoined the Scorpions in late 1978 during the recording of the Lovedrive album, on which he plays lead guitar on three songs, he participated in some touring for that album before leaving to form the Michael Schenker Group (MSG) in 1979.

The Michael Schenker Group has featured a mostly revolving door of different singers and musicians. The original singer was Gary Barden who sang on the first two studio albums (The Michael Schenker Group 1980, MSG 1981) and the live album One Night at Budokan (1982) before being replaced by Graham Bonnett for one album, Assault Attack (1982) and one live gig with the band before being fired. Barden rejoined for the remainder of the tour and remained on board for the next album 1983's Built to Destroy, and the live album Rock Will Never Die.

After Barden's second departure Schenker teamed up with Robin McCauley and reorganized the band as the McCauley Schenker Group. This band recorded three albums in a more commercial rock vein.
Perfect Timing (1987)
Save Yourself (1989)
MSG (1992)
Along with live material, Nightmare (The Acoustic MSG) and Unplugged Live both released in 1992.

During the 90's following the disbandment of the McCauley Schenker Band, Michael briefly replaced Robin Crosby in Ratt, appearing on the bands 1990 MTV Unplugged performance. He then rejoined UFO in 1993 co writing the Walk On Water reunion album released in 1995, touring with them briefly. He then reformed the Michael Schenker Group in 1996 releasing three more albums
Written In The Sand (1996)
The Unforgiven (1999)
Be Aware of Scorpions (2001)

Schenker also rejoined UFO for two more releases
Covenant (2000)
Sharks (2002)

Following the next departure from UFO, he reassembled a new Michael Schenker Group and released Arachnophobiac (2003). In 2005 to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the band he put together the Tales of Rock and Roll album enlisting the singers of each incarnation of the band to sing on the album. In 2008 the band released In The Midst Of Beauty. In 2010 the live 30th anniversary concert Live in Tokyo was released.

Here is a list of some of the members who have passed through the Michael Schenker Group through the years, one hell of a who's who of rock greats.
Vocalists: Gary Barden, Graham Bonnett, Derek St. Holmes, Doogie White
Keyboards: Don Airey, Paul Raymond, Tommy Eyre
Bass: Chris Glen, Billy Sheehan, Pete Way, Neil Murray, and Francis Buchholz
Drums: Ted McKenna, Denny Carmassi, Cozy Powell, Simon Phillips, Chris Slade, Carmine Appice, and Herman Rarebell.

Other Michael Schenker projects have included:
the "Thank You" solo album series (Thank You, Thank You 2, Thank You with Orchestra, Thank You 3, and Thank You 4, in addition to three other solo albums.

Temple of Rock yielded three studio albums and two live albums.
Schenker Pattison Summit was another project spawning two albums.

He also recorded an album with Pete Way from UFO entitled The Plot, an acoustic album with Gary Barden entitled Schenker/Barden, and a short lived supergroup Contraband, featuring Schenker, Richard Black, Tracii Guns, Share Pederson and Bobby Blotzer, which released one album in 1990 that was a commercial failure.

Michael is back with a band he is billing Michael Schenker Fest, they released a live album in March and are working on a new studio album and are touring. It features Gary Barden, Graham Bonnett, Robin McCauley, and Doogie White, all four vocalists are touring with this show and are in the studio working on this new record. This lineup, I assume also includes the rhythm section of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, bassist Chris Glen and Ted McKenna who were also early members of the Michael Schenker group, as they were part of the previous live shows.

New video of the song Warrior from the upcoming Michael Schenker fest album. This is different having all the singers singing different verses but pretty cool. Great to see Michael Schenker group alumni and former Alex Harvey band rhythm section Chris Glen and Ted McKenna on this. Can't wait for this show I got my ticket  8)

I got a fun story of seeing Michael Schenker back in 2010.

Scorpions were headlining and Michael was going on 3rd down from them.  I was up front on the barrier for his set.  Gary Barden was singing with Herman Rarebell on drums.  Eddie Trunk was hosting the festival.  I look over at stage left and sitting crosslegged for the whole set was Tracii Guns, who'd played the side stage earlier.  Then Jeff LaBar from Cinderella (playing later on main stage) comes out to watch standing next to Trunk and Guns.  At one point all three of them are air guitaring.  Then Rudolf and Klaus from the Scorpions join them to watch Michael perform.  I'd never seen that many band members from other bands watch a set before.  Trunk usually disappears after a song or two to do interviews or whatever he does.  Seeing the look of awe in Guns and Labar's eyes as they watched blew me away and speaks to the respect Michael has as a guitarist from his peers.  Michael and Herman came out and jammed with the Scorps on Holiday and Coast to Coast.

Without a doubt some of Michaels soloing on those 70's UFO records influenced countless 80's metal bands. Not surprised that they regard him that way. Very cool. Him and Rarebell jamming with the Scorps had be awesome too.

Man, what a great show that Michael Schenker Fest was. If this show is coming anywhere near any of you go see it. I saw them last night at the TLA in Philly. I'd say near capacity crowd, wasn't a whole lot of elbow room to spare. The listed capacity for the venue is a thousand.

The set list, I'll cheat and use setlist.com because I didn't know all of these songs.
  https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/michael-schenker/2018/the-theatre-of-living-arts-philadelphia-pa-13eff535.html

But as you can see by the set list he played for a good 2.5 hours, they came on around 9pm, I missed the first song and came in on song #2 Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, and the show ended just after 11:30.

Definitely a good mix of songs, thirty in total. Five UFO songs, as he made mention of it being forty years since Strangers In The Night's release, which made up the closer of the main set (Rock Bottom, and a blistering long solo) and the four encores (Doctor Doctor, Shoot Shoot, Natural Thing, and Lights Out), one Scorpions song (Coast to Coast, which he said he wrote and loaned to his brother Rudolf, which received a good laugh from the crowd) interspersed with eleven Michael Schenker Group songs, three McCauley Schenker Group songs, five songs from the new release, and five songs from Temple of Rock.

The new stuff sounded great, the highlights were Warrior and Take Me To The Church. Cry For The Nations, Attack Of The Mad Axeman, Armed And Ready, Coast to Coast, Desert Song, Dancer, Assault Attack, and before The Devil Knows Your Dead were all awesome. As were a few others that I didn't recognize.

Chris Glen and Ted McKenna formerly of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, as well as prior Michael Schenker Group lineups were on fire, they haven't lost a beat. Great to finally see those two. Whoever was playing keyboards and second guitar also did a nice job. All four singers were great. Graham Bonnet sounds great for his age, Barden and McCauley were both excellent, as was Doogie White who provided probably the most energy.

I'll post up some you tube videos of the show as they become available. In talking to some guy's at the show, they said last nights show was much better than the Irving Plaza NY show. Judging from the crowds response I think everybody pretty much enjoyed the show.

Steve Mann is keys/other guitar guy.  He played with McCauley/Schenker in the late 80's early 90's.

I just liked the fact that they seemed to really be enjoying playing together.  Chris Glen is just fun to watch.  Ted just smiling away on the kit.  Looking forward to seeing them again when they come through Europe again.

Bonnet is coming thru here in May, just got a ticket to see them.

Glad they had a good show.

That all sounds good. looks like that went off pretty well for having a lot of different ego's, mainly speaking of all the vocalists worked into that show. Looks like they all embraced it and really had a good time with it. Very cool to see. Michael looks like he is back in top form and good shape these days.
